Step by Step Yoast SEO Tutorial

Keywords. Research. Content creation. Digital optimization. I need a Yoast SEO Tutorial!

SEO can easily appear overwhelming – especially for working professionals who don’t have time to master yet another skill.

That’s where Yoast SEO comes in. This WordPress plugin guides SEO efforts on web pages and blog posts with personalized content recommendations.

Yoast SEO Tutorial

Once Yoast SEO finishes installing it’s time to work some SEO magic without learning a million news things about technology. (We’ll keep it to a few new things about technology!)

There are two ways to approach using the Yoast SEO plugin.

  1. Write your content in the WordPress editor and adopt SEO recommendations as you go
  2. Write your content using another document editor (like MS Word or Google Docs), paste your copy into the WordPress editor, then make changes based on Yoast’s SEO recommendations

To access Yoast SEO, create or edit a Page or a Post.

Scroll down until you see Yoast SEO. It will look something like this:

The snapshot above provides a preview of what the Page or Post will look like when it appears in Google Search results.

“SEO title” is the title of your page or blog post.

“Slug” is the string of text that identifies a unique page in a website. For example, in www.example.com/our-services, “our-services” is the Slug.

“Meta description” is a brief and accurate description of the content on the web page or post.

In this section, it is possible to edit the appearance of the SEO title, Slug, and Meta description. Tweak this section to create a Google Search result snippet that attracts clicks.

Consider putting important information here, like:

  • Location
  • Phone number
  • Service or product information
  • Date your business was established
  • Associations/Certifications
  • A witty teaser that forces clicks out of curiosity

Notice the orange and green bars below “SEO title” and “Meta description”? These bars guide the creation of titles and descriptions of perfect length.

Titles and descriptions that are too short don’t contain enough information. Those which are too long get cut off, making them impossible to read fully. Yoast SEO makes it easy to know when your text is just right. When the bar becomes green, the text is at an adequate length.

Scroll down a little more. The “Focus keyword” section is just below.

This section is the most important feature of the Yoast SEO plugin. After typing your most important keyword into the box, Yoast SEO gets to work by automatically populating recommendations in the “Analysis” section right below.

“Analysis” is SEO treasure. Items in green mark things you did well. Orange are suggestions that you should take but don’t necessarily have to. Red items should be improved.

Analysis runs in real-time, so you receive automatic feedback after every change.

Scroll up to the top of the Yoast SEO plugin and find the “Readability” tab.

Readability provides analysis of the content, measured by several content checks.

Did you know you could SEO your WordPress website with a simple plugin? Plugins exist that will make your web pages load faster, target search terms, and allow you to control how your website appears in Google’s search results. All of these aspects are important in improving your rank in the search engine results page.

We’ll explore 5 great SEO plugins for WordPress:

  • Yoast SEO
  • W3 Totach Cache
  • All In One Schema.org Rich Snippets
  • AMP
  • EWWW Imager Optimizer

Yoast SEO

Yoast SEO is an all-in-one WordPress SEO plugin that guides you through steps for website optimization. It will analyze your page content as you are writing and make suggestions to improve your content. You can target important keywords and prepare your web pages to receive search engine traffic.

The premium version of this plugin has even more features, but the free version is pretty great as is.

Yoast SEO will help you SEO many features of your website. In particular, this plugin makes it easy to target keywords and create meta descriptions: two important features to improve your online presence.

Target Keywords

Google counts the prominence and number of times certain words are found on your website. Words that appear the most often on a web page often describe the content. The prominence of specific words, or keywords, are important in determining how your website will be found in the search engine results page.

It’s important to consider what keywords might lead qualified customers to your website from Google Search. For example, if you sell hiking equipment in a local store, you might want to include the keyword phrases “hiking gear in Boulder” and “outdoor clothing store near me” within your website.

A blog is an excellent tool for targeting keywords. Take a few minutes to write down a list of keywords related to your business, products, and/or service. You can write a blog post about each keyword. This will make it more likely for your website to appear in the search results page for that specific term.

The Yoast SEO plugin will provide feedback on your blog post, and acknowledge if you are targeting your keywords optimally. The image below provides an example of Yoast’s page analysis feature.

Create Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions are brief descriptions of content on a web page. In the image below, the meta description is the dark grey text.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has a well-crafted meta description. It tells you exactly what information you can find on the website – details on natural history exhibits, shows and activities at the museum. It is not too long that it is cut off, and it is not too short with too little information.

The Yoast SEO plugin has a feature that will allow you to create meta descriptions for each web page and blog post on your WordPress website.

For optimum effectiveness, meta descriptions should be about 200 characters long. Your meta descriptions should be concise and contain your best keywords. Each page of your website should have its own meta description.

W3 Total Cache

The W3 Total Cache WordPress plugin is designed to improve user experience and SEO.
This plugin boasts an impressive 10x improvement in overall site performance when fully configured. In short, this plugin can make your web pages load incredibly fast.

W3 Total Cache allows for caching. A cache stores information so future requests to access that information can be served faster.

Let’s say you read an article on NYTimes.com. While you’re reading, your browser saves a “copy” of the web page in the cache. Another day you decided to open the same article online. The copy of the stored web page loads nearly instantly, achieving significantly faster page load speed. All thanks to caching!

All In One Schema.org Rich Snippets

A rich snippet is basically a short summary of your page in the search results of Google, Yahoo, Bing and sometimes in the News feed of Facebook. Rich snippets appear in an attractive format with star ratings, an author photo, image, or other feature. All In One Schema.org Rich Snippets makes creating an attractive search appearance it easy.

Create Accelerated Mobile Pages with the AMP plugin for WordPress!

AMP are versions of web pages designed to load lightning-fast on mobile devices. Reducing page load time positively affects your website’s ranking in search results. This can result in your website appearing more often and in more prominent positions in the search engine results page.

Once installed the AMP WordPress plugin will automatically create AMP versions of your web pages. No programming required!

EWWW Image Optimizer

Have you ever witnessed an image loading slowly – perhaps even line by line?

EWWW Image Optimizer reduces image file sizes, allowing images to load faster and boosting your SEO. This WordPress plugin scans every image you upload or have already added to your site and optimizes them to a smaller file size before adding it to your media library.

Bonus Tip!

Now that you have the best WordPress plugins for SEO, considering removing any unnecessary plugins already installed on your website. Have you installed any plugins that you are not currently using? By deactivating and deleting plugins you are not using, your web pages can load even more quickly!
